SWFLMRC Holds Training at NOVA University
On February 1, 2011, over 100 SW Florida Medical Reserve Corps (SWFLMRC) volunteers participated in a full day training session at NOVA University. The course objective was to learn about responding and caring for patients in a mass casualty incident.
Drs. Ray and Pat Santucci, both Sanibel residents, and Dr. Keith Fishbein of Bonita gave presentations on how to manage injuries from various weapons of mass destruction: high explosives (blast and burn effects), radiological devices and chemical agents.
In the afternoon, Lee County’s special hazardous materials team provided hands on training and displayed their special protective equipment and detection devices. Volunteers assisted the fire department in setting up a decontamination station and became familiar with their role in caring for patients.
The MRC is a volunteer organization of healthcare professionals and interested citizens who are deployed by the Lee County Health Department during disasters, both natural and man-made, and public health medical crises.
Last year, the SWFLMRC was responsible for the H1N1 clinic, which was held on Sanibel. Approximately 1000 injections were provided to residents. The MRC is also responsible for manning the airport rapid response team, which provides first aid in case of a major aircraft incident. During non-disaster times, the MRC is busy with screening clinics, education and prevention programs and other community health activities.
To support the MRC activities, the SWFLMRC Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, is holding a fundraiser – Operation Rain barrel—sponsored by the San-Cap Chapter of the MRC. Local artists have donated their talents to produce unique, one of a kind, hand painted rain barrels. The painted barrels will be on display at various locations on Sanibel and Captiva from Feb 18- March 4th. During that time individuals can bid on the barrels or donate to the Foundation. On March 5th, between 10-4 pm, the collection of barrels will be on display in a garden setting, at CIP’s Place with final bidding ending at 4:00 pm. There is no admission charge, and representatives of the MRC will be available to discuss programs and opportunities with potential volunteers. All funds donated will used to buy medical supplies and equipment for the SW Florida MRC.
